Kingman, AZ Newborn, Family, and Child Photographer | 1:1 Mentoring with Anja Photography in Chicago

In the beginning of June, I flew out to Chicago, so I could mentor with Anne Kerr of Anja Photography. My oldest daughter, Gracie, was fortunate enough to be able to accompany me on my trip, as the model for the 1:1.

Having four children, I always try and spend quality, one-on-one time with each of my kids. This trip was the perfect opportunity to do just that with my oldest daughter.

I have passed through Chicago many times before, but never stopped and saw the sights, so that’s what we did on the first day we were there. We went to The Shedd Aquarium, and of course what trip to Chicago would be complete without driving down Oprah Winfrey Way, and seeing Harpo Studios!!  Can you tell that I grew up watching The Oprah Winfrey Show?! 😉

As you can tell, my daughter doesn’t share in my love for Oprah…HA! In her defense, though, by this point in our trip, we had already been awake for 24 hours, so I guess I will let her lack of enthusiasm slide. 😉

After spending the day sight-seeing with my girl, we went to our hotel and got a well-deserved good night’s sleep. My mentoring with Anne was set to begin in the afternoon on the following day.

I was so excited for the opportunity to mentor with Anne, and having images taken of Gracie by her was just icing on the cake for me. 🙂

Over the past couple of years, I have taken numerous online webinars through Horizon Within (Anne Kerr and Leah Robinson’s online editing classes), so I kind of already knew what to expect with my 1:1 experience with Anne.

When you take the webinars through Horizon Within, they are chock-full of useful information, and leave you completely mind-blown!  I have not taken any other editing webinars through anyone else, since discovering theirs. That’s how much I swear by their techniques and methods.  I was addicted and found myself wanting to learn more, so after taking 3-4 webinars through them, I signed myself up for a 1:1 with Anne.

Meeting her in person was awesome. She was so warm and friendly, greeting me with a big hug upon first meeting her.

We first sat down and chatted for quite awhile, then she looked through my favorite 10 images that I have taken, critiquing my work, helping me to see things that I hadn’t seen or noticed before.

We then went out to our first location, where she shared how she chooses locations, as well as how she interacts with her families and small children during her sessions.

One thing that surprised me was how funny she was! She had my daughter laughing and smiling the whole time, and in no time at all, Gracie was feeling completely confident and comfortable with the entire experience.

After going to three different locations, she took us out for Chicago style pizza (which was delicious, by the way!!), then went back to my hotel lobby to take a look at some of the images we took, and she walked me through her entire editing process about 3 times, before calling it a night.

Even though I have watched her edit so many times before, it never gets old to me, and I find myself picking up on things that I had forgotten about before, or new tips/tricks that I may have missed. The editing portion was such a great refresher for me, and I couldn’t wait to get home and practice what I had learned!

The learning experience did not stop in Chicago, though. A few months after our 1:1, she did a follow-up webinar with me, reiterating what I had learned, allowing me to ask questions and fully understand the editing process that I had learned.

I would highly recommend 1:1 mentoring with Anne, and even if you have taken some of the webinars through her already, I still think the 1:1 is worth every penny, and then some!

I learned so much from her, and adored the entire experience with her. She really is such a kind and humble artist, even in person, and I’m so blessed to have been able to meet her. And, imagine my daughter’s surprise when she received this orange dress in the mail, just because Anne knew how much Gracie loved it!  You seriously can not get any sweeter than that!

Thank you, Anne, for making our experience amazing and making my girl feel so special! <3

Here are some of the images that were taken during my time with her….
