Kingman, AZ Newborn Photographer | Grigg Maternity

This past weekend, I did a maternity session for a very sweet couple, whom are expecting their first baby in February. Their family happen to own an old schoolhouse in a small town located on historic Route 66, and it was very important to them to do their maternity session there.

I had driven by this schoolhouse many times before and because I am fascinated with older buildings (I’m from the Midwest, where old, antique buildings are in abundance, and I definitely miss that around here. 😉 ), I was thrilled when they asked me to do their session there!

And because I love hearing the history of old places, they were kind enough to talk to me about the history of their family, the town, and the schoolhouse, as well as type up some information about it, so that I could include it in their blog post.  So, if you are interested in the history of the original Hackberry School and the town, read on! 🙂

In addition to using the schoolhouse, we took a few pictures next to one of the first homes to have been built in Hackberry, which happened to be their great great grandparents’ home, John and Emma Grigg. That home was built in 1921.  John and Emma Grigg were the second generation of Grigg’s to live in Mohave County.

The schoolhouse, once called Hackberry School, was built in 1917, which means that this year it is a full century old! It was pretty neat knowing that we were taking their pictures in a building that was exactly a century old!

The schoolhouse is a two room schoolhouse, with a kitchen, two bathrooms, and a living quarters for the teacher. Standing in that bedroom seemed so foreign to me…it would be so weird to live where you worked!  There were some old desks in the schoolhouse, and since my mom has a collection of antique school desks (she is an elementary school teacher, too), I knew that the oldest one in there must have been from the 1950’s-1960’s, which was very neat.

The school eventually closed in 1996, when it flooded, and students were moved to the new location of the school, now known as Cedar Hills School.

The Grigg family still owns the little schoolhouse in Hackberry, and hope to someday refurbish it.

Thank you, Grigg family, for allowing me to use this awesome location for your maternity session! I can’t wait to take your little boy back there for his one year session! 🙂

I was on of the last 8th graders to go to school here in 1994 and the school did not get shut down because of a flood in 1996! I was shut down in 1994 by the school district! Your pictures are Very beautiful! Brings back many childhood memories! ReplyCancel
