So you are newly expecting, and your head is spinning with all the things you need to do before baby makes his or her arrival in 9 months. Hiring a newborn photographer is one of the items on your list, but what should you look for? What questions should you ask?

As a mother myself, I know all too well how fleeting these moments with a newborn baby are. One minute you are sleep deprived and can’t wait for them to “just be a little older, more independent, sleep through the night, etc.”. The next minute you are wishing time would slow down. Newborn photography is a way to ensure that time slows down and is captured for you, so you will always have those memories of their newness.

With so many options out there, your top priority should be the safety of your baby. How many years of experience does the photographer have? Is newborn portraiture their specialty, or do they only dabble with it here and there? Have they been trained by a professional, learning how to safely pose your newborn?

Does the photographer’s galleries show consistency?  It is easy to show a “highlight reel” of a handful of beautiful images on Facebook or Instagram, but what does the entire finished gallery look like? This is a question that should be asked, to ensure that when you are booking your newborn photographer, you will be more than satisfied with the end results of your session.
