Oaklyn’s mama contacted me at my Kingman Newborn Photographer studio pretty early on in her pregnancy, telling me she was pregnant with twins! I was over the moon for her!
It wasn’t too soon after when she received devastating news that one of them had a very serious condition, and she would most likely not make it. She actually canceled the session with me. But, later decided that even though Emerson probably wouldn’t make it, she still wanted to celebrate Oaklyn, the surviving twin.
That takes a lot of strength to put your pain aside and celebrate one, while grieving the other. I admired her so much for her strength and unwavering faith.
On the day of the session, the mood was somber, and I definitely teared up behind the scenes when I took pictures of Oaklyn with pictures of her twin sister, Emerson. It was so touching.

I’m so glad they took pictures of Emerson during the 5 hours that she was here on earth, because I was able to use them for Oaklyn’s session. In addition to the image of Oaklyn holding a picture of her twin sister, I also wanted to create something extra unique for them.
At first, I had planned on just putting Oaklyn in this one, with some angel wings to represent Emerson. But, I couldn’t get it to look quite right. That’s when I looked at the picture of Emerson and wondered if I could somehow use that photo and place her in the image along with Oaklyn. It’s definitely not perfect, but I think it will be something that mom and dad will cherish forever.

I also took a picture of Oaklyn in a bucket, next to an empty bucket where Emerson would have been. In newborn photography, an empty bucket symbolizes the loss of a pregnancy or infant. It’s such a raw and heartbreaking image.

Both mom and dad are such pillars of strength. They are an inspiration to anyone whom has experienced loss.

I love using real flowers in my newborn sessions. I was very excited that these flowers from a wedding I attended a couple weeks prior, were still just as beautiful for Oaklyn’s session as the day of the wedding! The trick about keeping them in the fridge really works to prolong their life!
