A Snow Session in Arizona can be rare in some parts of the state. But, here in Kingman, we are pretty lucky to get snow in the winter several times a year in our nearby Hualapai Mountains. Kingman is really a great place to live. We are pretty centrally located; Las Vegas is an hour and a half away, Phoenix is 3 hours away, we have lakes all around us within 30 minutes to an hour away, and if we ever want to experience snow, that’s only a 20 minute drive up the mountain!
Lauren really wanted to do a snow session this year. I definitely don’t feel confident driving in snow (I might originally be from Minnesota, but I’m pretty much an Arizona native! 😉 ). These clients are dear friends of ours, so they didn’t mind my tagging along with them up to the location.
I told Lauren from the beginning that we would have to be flexible with our schedules. The session would be on whim, because the snow doesn’t always stick around for very long. She went ahead and bought all of the outfits, and we were ready to go!
The day of the session, I was taking my 2nd graders to lunch (Zoey is actually one of my 2nd graders this year!). I noticed there was snow on a nearby mountain, so I looked at the weather cameras to check the Hualapais. Sure enough, there was snow! I texted Lauren, and a few hours later, we were on our way.
The location is stunning! I have photographed a session there once before, so I was excited to see what it looked like with all the snow. It’s on private property, and the owners are good friends with the Chavez family. They kindly allowed us to use it. I felt so lucky, because it’s a place that isn’t overrun with other photographers.
